Unlicensed Ontario operators faced with new legislation

Unlicensed gambling operators in Ontario will now face further scrutiny as new legislation is set to come into effect.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has made amendments to the Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming, primarily to standard 1.22. The new rules affect the transition period that had previously been allowed between unlicensed operators and suppliers. This period, which was intended to allow unregulated companies to move into regulated markets smoothly and without disruption, will now come to an end.

Any operator or supplier conducting business without the required legal and regulatory approval will now have to cease all activities immediately. Any found to have been in breach of the new rules will be faced with the ‘appropriate regulatory action’ and may have future applications for licenses rejected.

The AGCO made a series of other legislation changes as well, including for iGaming, live dealer games, and the installation of casino and gaming equipment.

The amendments are intended to reflect the AGCO’s desire to make Ontario a safe and well-regulated gambling market.

The rule changes will come into effect on 31 October, with the AGCO committing to support companies as they adapt to new rules in an effort to minimize disruption to businesses.
