UK operators in Denmark will face different rules

The Danish Gaming Authority, Spillemyndigheden has published new guidance relating to UK operators in Denmark. They have noted that these operators will face different rules of operations once the UK has left the EU as a result of Brexit.

Appointing a representative

According to Spillemyndigheden, any operators who are based outside of the European Union will need to appoint a representative in order to continue offering online gambling products to a Danish market.

This will include all operators in the UK once Brexit officially comes to an end on 1 January 2021. The resident must either be within Denmark or in another EU country for the Danish Gaming Authority to accept them.

The clock is ticking

This recent update is a reminder to any operators who might not already have a representative in Denmark as the year comes to an end. There are just a few weeks left until this new rule comes into place and so operators must be willing to make a change now to protect their operations in Denmark.

The Spillemyndigheden has released full guidance on its website. Restrictions have been tightening in Denmark and this has resulted in their gambling revenue falling by 5% year-on-year. Hopefully, enough operators elect a representative within the EU to help bring the revenue back up to where it needs to be.

Brexit will impact the gambling industry in a number of ways, and this is just one of them. Operators and affiliates must understand any new rules implemented by EU countries in order to protect their business once the transitional period is over in January.
