North Carolina keeps paving the way for legalised sports betting with a senate bill that would allow the state regulator to authorise between 10 and 12 online sports betting operators. This could help pay for education expenses and school construction.

A month after opening its first legal sports betting venues, the US state introduced legislation to regulate online sports betting.
On April 7, a group of North Carolina senators filed senate Bill 688, which if passed, would make sports betting legal in the state and expand the North Carolina sports wagering market to allow online and mobile betting.
Let’s remind that sports betting is currently only permitted via tribal operators in the state, which has two tribal casinos.
A comprehensive bill
The extensive bill includes strict guidelines from the number of licences that can be issued and how long for to what can be bet on such as professional and collegiate sports, esports and amateur sports.
It also includes measures to establish a new self-exclusion system and outlines how a person can run a sports gambling operation in the state.
For a good cause
Senators have claimed that legalising online sports gambling could be the answer to fund school construction and education expenses.
The bill recommends charging a $500,000 (£365,000) licencing fee, though refunded if the application is turned down, with permits running for five years, after which the operator would need to pay $100,000 (£73,000) to renew.
A tax rate of 8% on adjusted gross revenue from operators holding an interactive sports betting licence is also recommended.
