Michigan opens application process for online gaming operators

Online gaming in Michigan is now moving forward, with online sportsbooks and casinos now able to apply for licences in the state.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) had already been working towards launching the iGaming market, with gaming suppliers allowed to submit their applications from May onwards.

Both tribes and commercial casinos in the Great Lake State will be eligible for these new permits.

Meanwhile, supporting operators and suppliers will also be allowed to register as a vendor if approved by the MGCB.

Progressing towards the launch of online gaming in Michigan

MGCB Executive Director Richard Kalm expects online gaming in Michigan to go live either by the end of this year or early in 2021. Sports betting and online casino were supposed to have gone live earlier in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to delays.

Kalm said the following.

“The MGCB continues to make progress toward the launch of online gaming by adding forms for operators and vendors.

“Operators should file applications soon so we can conduct investigations and work with them on internal controls, technical standards, lab certifications and other requirements.

“In addition, the operators and suppliers should encourage their vendors to complete and submit registration forms.”

How’s the market shaping up?

Since Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed bills to regulate both online casino games and sports wagering last December, there has been interest from suppliers and operators alike.

Kambi Group is one big name that will be entering the market. The sportsbook supplier has penned a new partnership with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi’s Four Winds Casinos

Kambi will supply on-premise sports betting technology to the Four Winds Casinos in New Buffalo, Hartford and Dowagiac.

Chief Executive Kristian Nylén spoke about the expansion, with his words written below.

“We are very proud to be entering this partnership with the Pokagon Band and its Four Winds Casinos.

“They are a leading operator in the Midwest and share our commitment to providing customers with consistently engaging experiences.”
