Massachusetts grants BetMGM betting license, but with strings attached

Both BetMGM and MGM Springfield have been granted sports betting licenses from the recently established Massachusetts Gaming Commission, but BetMGM has been given a series of conditions to getting theirs.

BetMGM is an online venture of the land-based MGM Springfield casino operators, and while both have been given a license, the online BetMGM has been told her are regulator concerns. These concerns include Etain’s latest settlement with the Great Britain Gambling Commission that came to a record £17 million. The GB Gambling Commission found a series of issues around social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings across the online and land-based businesses.

According to iGaming Business: “The GB Gambling Commission said, and Entain acknowledged, that the operator’s risk assessments did not refer to terrorist financing, nor did it make specific reference to customer nationality or business risks in the geographical risk section.”

Other concerns included that certain customers had the ability to deposit large amounts of money without an interaction like a source of funds check.

As a result of these concerns, BetMGM must provide a vendor diversity list and timely updates on developments to confidential investigations.
