Global Gaming given Sweden review permit

Global Gaming has been granted a review permit in Sweden, meaning that its lengthy dispute with Spelinspektoren continues.

The gaming firm has been locked in a legal battle since last June, after its commercial online gambling licence for SafeEnt was revoked. After this, flagship brand Ninja Casino ceased operations in the Swedish market.

What happens next?

The Administrative Court of Appeal in Jönköping will now determine whether Spelinspektoren’s June 2019 decision was justified or not.

Tobias Fagerlund, Global Gaming CEO, said: “We are, of course, relieved that the Administrative Court of Appeal today has granted a review permit of the case. We hope that the court will eventually share our opinion that the Swedish Gambling Authority’s decision was disproportionate and incorrect.”

Appeals unsuccessful so far

Global Gaming hasn’t switched its stance since having its licence revoked. It believes that it has been treated unfairly. The most recent appeal, which occurred in November, was lost.

According to Spelinspektoren, the permit was originally removed due to “serious deficiencies” in the country’s operation. The regulator believed that SafeEnt had failed to implement appropriate player protection and anti-money laundering measures.

Following the November appeal result, Fagerlund expressed that he was “disappointed”. However, he also mentioned the Malmö-headquartered company’s plan to continue appealing. Whether or not their efforts have been fruitful remains to be seen.

The Global Gaming CEO believed that this review was necessary not just for the brand itself, but also “for the legislation and future of the gambling industry in Sweden”.

Addressing issues

Spelinspektoren has begun to clamp down on issues that arose in the first year of Sweden’s re-regulated iGaming market. In December, it was made clear that illegal gambling would be addressed.

Since then, six unlicensed operators have been banned from operating in Scandinavia’s largest country. Between these, dozens of websites were being run – all of which have been blocked too.
