Affiliate Drive Time Week 16 – When should you remove an affiliate?

In a recent webinar, Lee-Ann was asked a question – should we ever remove affiliates from an affiliate program?

This is a very important question and one that we should all be considering carefully. Affiliate managers need to carefully build relationships with affiliates and only take the step towards removing them when it is absolutely necessary.

In this week’s episode of Affiliate Drive Time, Lee-Ann offers advice on how to handle the process of removing an affiliate. She also touches on when this is appropriate and when there could be better alternatives. Check out the video and read the blog below to get some more tips and tricks.

Do you need to remove them?

Firstly, you should be aware that you don’t need to remove affiliates entirely from your program to stop working with them for the time being. You can simply make them inactive which can make the process easier for everyone.

You could find that while they are not bringing value to your business at the moment, they could in the future. By keeping them inactive, you can go back to them if needs be.

What is your motive?

Before you take that step toward removing an affiliate, you should consider why you have chosen to do this. Are they sending you low-quality traffic? Are they failing to bring in any revenue from month to month? In an ideal world, all affiliates would drive traffic and benefit the business, but this isn’t always the case.

When you figure out what the issue is, you should go back to the affiliate and talk to them about it. Ask them how they are promoting the brand and where they are sourcing their traffic from. There is always a reason why something doesn’t work, and it is your job to figure out what that is.

When you should remove them

Of course, there are some valid reasons why you might want to remove an affiliate from your program – including if they are showing fraudulent behaviour. If you start to notice some issues with the traffic that they are bringing in and suspect that they are up to no good, you might want to take action.

If you have human contact with the affiliate, however, you can make this decision based on your own personal experience with them. Do your due diligence and figure out why it isn’t working. If they aren’t the right fit, you can achieve them.
