Australia blocks six offshore gambling platforms

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has taken steps to block six offshore gambling platforms.

The move comes as the websites in question were found to be in breach of regulations and operating illegally in Australia.

The ACMA has ordered all internet service providers in Australia to block the websites Boomerang Casino, Olympia Casino, Pokie Surf, Rock n Reels, and 24 Casino after the platforms were found to operating in breach of terms set out in the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act.

Now, players in Australia will not be permitted to access and place wagers on the websites.

“ACMA is reminding consumers that even if a service looks legitimate, it’s unlikely to have important customer protections.

“This means Australians who use illegal gambling services risk losing their money. You can check if a wagering service is licensed to operate in Australia on our register,” an AMCA spokesperson said.

The Australian authorities have committed to cracking down on illegal gambling operations in recent years.

Since November 2019, 686 illegal platforms and affiliate sites have been blocked in the country.

Back in July last year, the body blocked 11 illegal gambling sites, despite one of which, thepokies.net, attracting 30,000 visitors from Australia every month.
