The affiliate marketing industry is incredibly exciting but can also be overwhelming for anyone just starting out. As a new affiliate marketer, you may have a lot of questions about how affiliate programs should work or the best tools to use for successful partner marketing and relationship building. We spoke to one of our new Affiliate Marketing Account Executive’s, Mantas Rackauskas about his experience in the industry so far as a newcomer to our Affiliate Agency team.
Check out what Mantas had to say and why we’ve now decided to launch a new YouTube Short series #AskAffiliateiNSIDER – with Lee-Ann Johnstone, specifically designed to help digital marketers who are being tasked with running and managing affiliate programs – get the best out of their affiliate partnerships and program marketing to drive consistent sales.
AffiliateINSIDER: What made you want to get into affiliate marketing?
Mantas: “I have always been interested in social media and online marketing in general. What stood out to me compared to other similar roles was that, every day there will be something new for you to do. It’s not your typical 9-5 job in regard to your day to day activity. I loved the idea of having a variety of tasks that I had to do and it wasn’t the same routine every day”
AffiliateINSIDER: What have you found challenging in your new role within the affiliate industry?
Mantas: “What I have found the most challenging in this role so far is definitely the terminology that my clients and colleagues use. There is a lot of internal affiliate lingo that at first was hard to get used to as you don’t tend to use it in any other environment. Also, at the beginning it was a little challenging to stay organised and keep everything up to date: who I spoke to, who I needed to send an email to, which report I needed to look at and how to utilise the data within it to make intelligent decisions for commercial negotiation. I think once I got into a rhythm and also completed our internal AMPP training program – which Lee-Ann makes every member of the team complete before dealing with client accounts it got easier to keep on top of most things. ”
AffiliateINSIDER: What kind of skills do you think are needed to work in affiliate marketing?
Mantas: “I think you need to be a good all-rounder to be honest. If you’re coming from a sales background – that is great as you have to be comfortable speaking and communicating with clients and partners too. Good communication skills are definitely helpful in this role. Being organised is also very handy, as you do have to self-manage your day and where you spend time, what tasks need to be prioritised as there are days where a million things happen at once and you have to allocate tasks in order of their importance otherwise you will get lost and lose track. Finally, great customer service is also important as you are dealing with humans all day. You want to make sure you know how to deal with all types of clients and make sure you come across as professional and give them the best service possible. ”
AffiliateINSIDER: What excites you most about being part of AffiliateINSIDER’s affiliate marketing team?
Mantas: “What excites me the most is having the opportunity to work in Affiliate Marketing is that this is a global industry and soon I’ll be able to travel to live networking events to meet with other people working in this industry and in other countries. Our agency works with clients in a number of verticals so I get exposed to digital marketing tactics cross-sector which is great for learning how different industries approach affiliate marketing and the strategies that go behind successful programs.”
AffiliateINSIDER: What advice would you give to a newcomer to the affiliate marketing industry?
Mantas: “My advice would be – make sure you are coachable and prepare yourself for a lot of learning and attend as many live webinars and free coaching sessions you can. The skills you will gain from experts who regularly share their insights this industry can be applied anywhere in the digital space therefore make sure you’re ready to be a newbie and learn from the ground up. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions that you need answers to. Lee-Ann is a great resource for this as she’s been working in the industry for almost two decades. It’s why I have asked her to contribute to this new series designed for newcomers like myself who are keen to learn and get on with the job at hand.”
AffiliateINSIDER: How have you educated yourself on affiliate marketing?
Mantas: Well, I’m one of the lucky few people who work with Lee-Ann so I get to learn from an industry veteran. This job is very much self led as the industry is still developing new tactics and strategies all the time. So you come into it with a bit of knowledge and keep building on from there. Having access to the first-hand experience, and being able to ask questions on the spot and have someone who’s an absolute expert in the field guide you through and give you the best advice is extremely helpful.
Of course, if you’re not so lucky – the next best thing is to consider joining AffiliateINSIDER’s exclusive Affiliate Manager Performance Program (AMPP) which is taught live by Lee-Ann over a 12 week period. It takes just 1 hour a week to complete and doesn’t intrude on your working hours as you can do it in a lunch break. Lee-Ann, herself teaches absolutely everything you need to know about becoming the most successful affiliate manager you can be. From dealing with objections to applying different strategies and even 1 to 1 sessions tailoring her advice to your specific affiliate program is by far the best training opportunity you can find in this industry as a newbie starting out and provides great grounding if you’re serious about building a career in affiliate marketing.”
