Affiliate Drive Time – Outcomes Vs Goals Setting

Goal setting is a usual part of our new year activity, but this year I’m not advising anyone to set goals. Instead, I am urging you to define a viable outcome by creating a plan of small, measured actions you will take in your affiliate program from today moving forward.

I talk about why I’m telling you this in this week’s Affiliate Drive Time video above.

Watch the video then read on below and take this weeks action…

Outcome vs Goals – What’s the difference?

You might be wondering what the difference between setting a goal and defining a viable outcome is, but this is something you need to straighten out right now. A goal is something that you want to DO by a certain date. This often limits you and places a lot of pressure on achieving that one particular goal, which could affect your progress in other areas.

In comparison, an outcome is something that you want to achieve by taking small, measured actions. These actions then work together to help you achieve that desired outcome and grow your business over time.

Using NLP thinking

This year, affiliate managers really need to rethink how they develop and manage their programs. We can’t follow the same strategies anymore as they just aren’t working the way that they used to.

Part of NLP thinking is to create methods and practices that can lead you to the desired outcome. This can be done by changing the way you view and do your work and manage the relationships that go along with it. This style of thinking can be extremely effective when done applied to affiliate program management.

I believe that there is a lot to be learned about NLP in the workplace. That’s why it is part of the coaching that we offer in our AMPP training program for affiliate managers. We help them level up their skills and develop tools that help them meet their goals. This is done through defining viable outcomes, rather than spending time setting unachievable goals.

Setting YOUR viable outcomes

So, how do you go about setting viable outcomes for your affiliate program?

These 6 principles are the key points  I use when creating a plan of ACTION.

As we begin the new year, I urge you to use these principles to define your activities and excel at what you do.

  1. Set positive actions – Be specific about the things you can do now to make a change
  2. Identify what’s in your control – How will you accomplish these actions using what you can control and influence?
  3. Be specific on outcomes – How will it impact your outcomes?
  4. Put it into context – When and why do you want to do these things?
  5. Consider resourcing – What will you need, who do you need?
  6. Prioritise on impact – What will move the needle faster to get you closer to your outcome? Focus on just that!

Use these six principles to set out your best viable outcomes in 2021 and follow on each week to start building your program growth. I’m committing to share all my learnings with you here – FREE _ every Wednesday at 10am!
